Dr.
Peter E. Sebaaly is a Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of
the Western Regional Superpave Center (WRSC) and the Pavement
Engineering & Science (PES) Program at the University of Nevada,
Reno (UNR). He is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of
Nevada & Arizona, USA. He earned his B.S.C.E. (1982) and M.S.C.E.
(1983) from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his Ph.D.
(1987) from Arizona State University, specializing in
pavements/materials engineering.
|

|
In
1990, Dr. Sebaaly joined the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno
(UNR). Dr. Sebaaly is currently
working on several research projects on the development of new
engineered materials to enhance the durability and sustainability of
asphalt pavements and the incorporation of these materials into design
methods and specifications for maintenance, rehabilitation, and
construction of pavements.

ABSTRACT
|
Pushing the Limit on Recycling Old Tires in
Asphalt Mixtures
|
|
The
majority of tire rubber modified asphalt mixtures use up to 20 percent
crumb rubber. The latest research conducted at the University of Nevada
has used up to 50 percent crumb rubber to modify asphalt mixtures. The
research evaluated the performance grades (PG) of the tire rubber
modified asphalt binders and multiple performance characteristics of the
modified asphalt mixtures, including; resistance to moisture damage,
rutting, fatigue and reflective cracking. In addition, the engineering
property of the tire rubber modified asphalt mixtures were evaluated in
terms of their dynamic modulus master curves.
The
presentation will cover all the data generated through the research
program and assess the impacts of the measured properties on the
estimated performance of asphalt pavements. The performance of asphalt
pavements will be evaluated through advanced mechanistic analyses that
combine the measured engineering properties and performance
characteristics of the rubber modified asphalt mixtures under various
conditions of dynamic vehicle loading.

Conference General Scope
|
|
RAR2022 will focus on any and all rubberized
asphalt materials containing scrap tire rubber, from a low percentage
such as 5 percent to higher percentages above even 24 percent. Since
there have been so many recent significant changes in the testing,
specifying and application of scrap tire rubber in asphalt this
Conferences focus is literally on all types of asphalt binders or asphalt
hot mixes containing any percentage of scrap tire rubber, as well as both
wet and dry applications. In addition both generic and proprietary
rubberized asphalt products can be reported. Case studies, environmental
effects and benefits, cost effectiveness of many paving construction
materials and techniques will be presented.
