BIO
|
|
|
Dr.
Kaloush is a FORTA Professor of Pavement Engineering in the School of
Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State
University (ASU). He is a registered Professional Engineer and has over
35 years of industrial and academic experiences in pavement
engineering.
|
Dr.
Kaloush worked with various consulting companies and state governments
on developing highway maintenance management systems solutions. He is
also the founder of Highway Consulting Services, Inc., providing
pavement management consulting services to local governments since
1996. Dr. Kaloush’s research work involved several material
characterizations projects (including asphalt rubber) for various
Department of Transportations around the world. He was also a key
participant in nationally recognized research projects such as: NCHRP
9-19 (Simple Performance Test for asphalt mixtures), 1-37A,
(Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide) and 9-44A (Endurance
limit for HMA Pavements).
Dr.
Kaloush’s recent research efforts resulted in patents/disclosures such
as: Nanostructured Aluminosilicate Wax Carrier for Asphalt; A Novel
Method to Measure Thermal Conductivity of Bituminous Material; and
Aerogel Composite Modified Bituminous Materials. He is recognized as of
the top 5% teachers in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU;

ABSTRACT
|
Pavements in Extreme Climates: challenges and
technologies to improve performance
|
|
Pavement
performance can be greatly impacted by environmental factors such as
temperature and moisture. Asphalt pavements in large temperature
differential climates possess challenges in their design and materials
selection to satisfy minimum durability, safety, and social attributes.
Temperature fluctuation induces thermal cracking in pavements, which is
one of the major pavement distresses that still need to be tackled at
many levels, especially in environmental locations where large
temperature differentials occur. The increasing trend of climate change
clearly emphasizes the need for innovative sustainable pavement designs
and the use of modified pavement systems.
Pavement
design and materials selection continue to evolve to address climate
challenges. At Arizona State University, many asphalt-rubber projects
have been completed over the past two decades to quantify the
environmental benefits and engineering properties of asphalt-rubber
modified pavements, including recent emerging technologies. This research program also inspired the
further development of new materials. This presentation will focus on
these issues and provide examples of environmental benefits and
durability. Three overall themes will be presented: the first one will
address the climate change impact on pavements; the second theme will
include an overview of the asphalt rubber projects completed; the third
theme will debate current and future challenges on how to move forward to
design pavements of the future.

Conference General Scope
|
|
RAR2022 will focus on any and all rubberized
asphalt materials containing scrap tire rubber, from a low percentage
such as 5 percent to higher percentages above even 24 percent. Since
there have been so many recent significant changes in the testing, specifying
and application of scrap tire rubber in asphalt this Conferences focus is
literally on all types of asphalt binders or asphalt hot mixes containing
any percentage of scrap tire rubber, as well as both wet and dry
applications. In addition both generic and proprietary rubberized asphalt
products can be reported. Case studies, environmental effects and
benefits, cost effectiveness of many paving construction materials and
techniques will be presented.
